The Waters of the US rules require that a stream or river, or other surface water channel, must be perennial or intermittent in a typical year to meet the definition of a “tributary.” To make this determination a combination of flow classifications and field data are needed to establish perennial or intermittent flow. The USGS StreamStats web application, including the Probability of Streamflow Permanence (PROSPER) tool allows users to obtain estimates of streamflow statistics for user-selected ungaged sites. The Streamflow Methodology for Identification of Intermittent and Perennial Streams and Their Origins developed by the North Carolina Division of Water Quality is also widely used to make field-based streamflow classifications and is included as part of this workshop.
The Swamp School is offering an online virtual workshop that will teach you both of these USACOE and USEPA suggested methodologies to quickly assist your jurisdictional determinations.
This class is a combination of on-demand presentations, assignments, quizzes, class discussions, and instructor guided field exercises. The field work is done at your local stream. You will be working with your instructor with both the online and the virtual field portion of the class. Stream data is sent to your instructor using the Swamps Schools state of the art web portal. You will quickly receive instructor comments, critiques and suggestions all designed to help you better understand the process and succeed. Our virtual field workshop is intended to simulate the hands-on experience of a traditional instructor lead workshop. The class will conclude with a capstone stream project.
Schedule
This workshop is divided into three modules that includes remote sensing tools, stream ecology concepts and field data collection techniques. Each module represents approximately 2-3 hours of workshop time totaling 8 total hours for the program. Additional field data collection time may be required depending on site location and access.
The course is being offered in an on-demand format. You can log in any time and watch the presentations and work on the assignments. There is not a specific time you need to start the class, and it is available anytime day or night. The class will remain active in your account for 120 days after your start the class.
