The Plants

During the workshop you will be presented with a series of virtual presentations that are organized based on the major US Army Corps of Engineers wetland stratums. Species common to wetlands will be featured in each of these presentations. These include:

  • Wetland Trees
    • Evergreen and Deciduous
  • Wetland Shrubs

  • Wetland Saplings
    • Evergreen and Deciduous

    • Wildflowers
    • Ferns
    • Sedges

    • Rushes
  • Wetland Woody Vines
    • Ivy

Region specific species will be discussed including the latest US Army Corps of Engineers wetland indicator for each of the 10 regions. Not all species discussed will be found in all 10 regions; however the most common wetland plants in each of the 10 regions will be presented.

Virtual Herbarium

A major part of the class includes the collection of plant samples and uploading them to our virtual herbarium. You will be asked to key out and identify major diagnostic characteristics of a select number of wetland plants common to your region. We will coach you on how to do this and provide you with guidance on a number of tips and tricks to properly identify the species in your virtual collection.

Once you complete the species presentations and submit your herbarium collection we will have you take a test to verify your proficiency in wetland plant identification. Once you pass this test you will become a Certified Wetland Botanist. As a Certified Wetland Botanist you will receive a certificate and an electronic seal that can be used for reports and proposals. This certification will remain valid for 5 years and is eligible for renewal with additional continuing education.

Time Limits

You must complete the class by the end of the session. If you are unable to complete the class within that time frame you MUST notify the Swamp School. You will be allowed to enroll in the next scheduled session without incurring an additional fee. However, some or all of your previous coursework may not carry over to the new session. Additional time extensions can be requested and may be subject to a re-enrollment fee.
