CORE Online Wetland Training
Online Regional Supplement and Wetland Delineation Training
Winter/Spring 2014 Session Now Enrolling
What are the three biggest challenges to getting wetland trained?
Are you working as a consultant, as a regulatory specialist, developer, property manager, surveyor, engineer, architect, student, etc.? Have you heard about all of the new changes to the way wetlands are assessed? Have you picked up one of the new manuals and felt overwhelmed? Wouldn’t be nice to have someone guide you through your training?
If you are like most people in the environmental field you have run into the need to delineate wetlands. It is almost impossible to contemplate any land use project without running into a wetland, stream or other water issue. The problem is that you need to get up to speed on this and perhaps even conduct the study, but there is no one in your office that can get you started.
This is a sad fact about how the wetland business has run aground. The folks that were very active in the wetland delineation business 10 to 15 years ago have mostly left the industry. The reason is that their work was directly tied to the real estate boom of the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Once this market crashed they were left with no work and the skill set that they possessed was no longer needed. Today we are seeing a real shortage of wetland veterans in the field. Many have retired, many have changed jobs and now sell insurance, and many have just disappeared. The end result is that there are very few folks that you can turn to and get trained or get some help.
So now you need to get trained. Here is the bad news.
The class is far away and will require overnight stays.
The class is a weeklong and your employer wants you to make up the non-billable time. That is what nights and weekends are for anyway, right? As an alternative your employer will pay the tuition, but you must take unpaid leave and pay all you travel expenses. Sleeping in your car perhaps?
You just went on a job interview and was told that it was expected that you have already completed the training before you are even considered for the job. Add that to you student loan!
Your son or daughter has a school play, soccer game, scout meeting, etc. that week.
You spouse or significant other has not seen you for weeks and now you tell them that you are going to be away for yet another week!
Your dog misses you!
Sorry, I will stop. There lots of challenges to getting started. In short these are the three biggest challenges to getting started.
1. Travel expenses
2. Billable time lost
3. Personal schedule conflicts
In 2006, The Swamp School launched its first venture into the online training world. Since then, we have learned a lot about what works and what does not work with online learning. Today, we are very pleased to announce a completely new online learning program for wetland delineation training. As noted above, the biggest obstacle you face are all of the problems related to the travel aspect of the class. Suppose we solved that problem for you.
The Swamp School’s new online wetland delineation training is entirely online and local. There is no out of town travel required. Even the field work is nearby.
So how does this work?
First you complete our Wetland CORE training online. This is the basic wetland training and includes the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Manual material that is still in use. We cover the conceptual framework of the wetland indicators as well as the regulatory context, court decisions and related laws in this module.
Next, you choose which Regional Supplement you need to be trained on. We offer all 10 and you can add more as you need them. Each Regional Supplement module presents all of the relevant wetland indicators as they pertain to that region.
Finally, you complete the field work at a wetland in your neighborhood. There is no longer a need to travel to far off lands to finish your training. We have developed step by step guide and HD videos that will show you exactly, what you need to do as if you were standing in the field class. You will turn in your wetland data for review along with photographs and one of our team of experts will work with you to help you complete your training.
We offer 24/7 support and bi-weekly call in sessions to answer your questions. You can work individually or as part of a team. Our training is a blend of live, interactive, and online modules. It is designed to get you trained at a pace and schedule that is convenient for you. Our training has also been accepted for a number of professional continuing education and certification programs.
